Diversions

More tutorials for today. At some point I need to ask on the Unity Forums about getting a better control binding scheme than the one that comes with the tutorials, but that’s for another day.

Since the software is mostly dull to watch, here was the dialog I wrote for the Wily and Light scene I described earlier:

Scene opens: Wily from the back. In front of him is a door. He raises a hand and knocks on the door.

After a moment, the door slides open. Roll is behind the door. She startles, and the door slams shut.

The door opens a second time, this time with Mega Man answering the door. Roll is nowhere to be seen.

Mega Man: What do you want?

Wily: What? Can’t I visit an old colleague? Bah! (Wily starts to turn around) This was…

Mega Man: Hold.

Wily stops

Mega Man tilts his head and touches his left ear piece, never taking his eyes off of Wily.

Mega Man (to earpiece): Sure? If you say so.

Mega Man (to Wily): Dr Light will see you. This way.

Mega Man points into the building, with his left hand.

Wily goes in, and Mega Man follows.

The walk through Dr. Light’s home/laboratory. Wily is uncharacteristically quiet, grim

Mega Man: We’re here.

He stops them at a non-descript door.

They enter. The laboratory is full of equipment, helper bots, and against one wall, is Doctor Light, in a reclining bed. A laptop is suspended over it. As they enter, Light is typing furiously, pulling chips out of it, and depositing them into helper bots, as they move around the room.

He puts one that chip into a helper bot, then leans back, seemingly exhausted.

Dr Light (weakly): What do you want, Doctor?

Wily: What, haven’t I always enjoyed your hospit…

Wily notices the capsule with the outline of a robot in it. He turns to it, hand out to touch it

Wily (awed tone): Is that…

Mega Man interrupts, pointing buster at Wily: Stop!

Wily recoils, as though he’d been burned

Wily: I wasn’t! I… I…

Wily deflates, sinking hunched, onto the nearest lab stool.

Wily: Oh what’s the use? I failed. Completely…

Light gestures to Mega Man. Mega Man puts the buster away and steps back, eyes still locked on Wily.

Light: Doctor… Al… what did you do?

Wily: I made one, Tom. Just like yours. Better even. Heh, yeah, better…

Mega Man (angry): How did you get the plans Wiley!

Wily: Pfah! You think I’m some undergrad needs it with a spoon? Tom and I have been at this for a long time. I saw your lecture.

Light: Ah. What happened?

Wily: Heh. They’re like children. He was fascinated by everything. Kept trying to bring me my spanner.

Wily chuckles, smiling: Took him three weeks to even figure out what a spanner was. Even tried to put a ham sandwich into one bot. Oh that took…

Light: Albert, what happened?

Wily stops, smile turns to grief: He went mad.

Light: You brought the plans?

Wily pulls a chip out of his pocket and holds it out.

Light gestures to wait. A helper bot brings up a tablet. Light pulls a chip out of his laptop, puts in it into the tablet, for a moment, then puts the chip back into the laptop, and folds it away.

Only then does Light take the chip from Wily, and puts it into the new tablet.

Light begins to scroll through the tablet, poking things, studying what must be on it.

Light stops, grimaces, very precisely puts the tablet down.

Light (angry): You chained him?

Wily nods

Light: How can you even think of asking me to help in this… Light pauses, at a loss for words

Wily: I can’t break the lock.

Light pauses, and observes Wily intensely

Wily: I know. They’re not just… I was wrong. I can’t… I can’t fix it. I just want the boy who tried to bring me my spanner back.

Light stares intently at Wily for a time. Then he closes his eyes, takes his glasses off, leans back in the bed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He stays deep in thought for a time. Then he sighs heavily, and turns to Mega Man.

Light: Mega, ask Roll to send in a pot of coffee with one of the helpers.

Mega Man: Sir? You’re not supposed to…

Light interrupts with a gesture: One mug. Not for me.

Light turns back to Wily: I have a lot to do, and not a lot of time left to do it. But, we will help him. Not for you; for his sake.

Mega Man: Sir?

Light looks at Mega Man, gestures to the capsule: They were made to be free. I’m sorry I couldn’t give that to you or your sister. But we own him that much.

Light turns back to Wily: Now, tell me everything.

Scene end.

Based on the later games in the X series, there are some lore issues with it. If Light has seen the plans here, how does eh not know anything about them in X5 or X6? And there are the implications in the later games that Wily is still running around, which would completely negate any sort of heal-face turn here. We’ll see if they can be plugged later. (And to be fair, this would not actually show up in the game, just be background story that happened, but isn’t directly told.)
